Recognising Qualities

When we were put together as a group, we thought it would best to recognize who would be best at doing what. When putting our heads together, we shortly realized that Matty was the most creative with editing, therefore we knew he should be the main editor within the group as he had the most experience and expertise with Adobe Premier. Laura and Ella both enjoy english and therefore it worked well with being in charge of the blog and ensure everyone had enough to blog about and offer help. Bethany was organised. This would be important when it came to organising shoots and the group. She also enjoyed ICT and therefore she took it upon herself to take charge of the digipak and advert.

What Makes a A Standard Storyboard

Before any filming of the music video takes place we musty create a full drafted storyboard with colour and explanations. There are many different factors that will be needed to be able to create a A grade standard storyboard.

The factor is tat the storyboard always must be detailed. As this is really the first draft of what you want the music video to look like each shot and editing sequences that will be included in the video. Furthermore, if storyboards are not detailed it may create confusion when it comes to filming certain shots because the director will not be able to understand the drawings of no caption is given.

Another factor to create a successful story board that camera angles and movement must be shown. By doing this it will show our director what type of pace of editing and camera movements we want. Furthermore, it will make it a lot more simpler and quicker to shoot things.

Another factor which will make an A grade storyboard is if the lyrics are shown on the storyboard, especially on performance scene of the band. This will make it much easier when it come to filming it as we will be able to know which scene goes with which section of the song.

Location Ideas

In our group we have many ideas for locations to use throughout our music video. We must be very selective when choosing locations as it can set the mood for the whole music video. As our video is probably more narrative then performance we must have similar locations in colour and mood. Below are photos of some locations we may use in our music video.

Our first idea for a location in our music video is the crypt in Seaton Delaval. If we use this it will be only used for the performance of the band in the music video. We want to use this building as a location as it shows signs of neglect and vandalism, which ties nicely in with our narrative as the boy is neglected and beaten down about his interest in dance. This building is also looks amazing with the correct lighting and camera work as seen above in this photo. Furthermore, the location expresses the theme in our band idea of the band wearing dark clothing and looking 'grungy'.

Our second idea for a location in our music video is stage school of dance studio. Where we will be using the inside and outside of the studios. This location would be used in the narrative as this is would be where we would shoot the dance scenes as the studio inside is very open and light. Furthermore, this studio is placed in a urban area, therefore we can link the boy's house to the studio. Also, this building is Victorian so this location can also look neglected and old.

Our third idea for location for our music video is the St Mary's asylum in Stannington. We could use this location for both narrative and performance. This location would be very good to use as it is very neglected and vandalized, which follows our narrative of the boy straying from 'social norms'. As one of the points of the narrative is that he is trapped in this mental state of dance, which could be connected to being trapped in this mental asylum. For the performance side of the video, this location could be used to contrast with the urban location that the narrative is used in.

Performance Aspects

For the performing aspect of the video, the band will be performing in a large, open space, somewhere a band would be unexpected to play. This links to the song emphasising that its acceptable not to conform to ‘social norms’.
The performance shots will be fast paced and short on each individual band member. Many instruments will be featured as the band are made up of 4 main instruments.
Shots on performance will be a range of long shots and close ups. These will be fast paced matching the pace of the music.

Our band will be young and enthusiastic.

Narrative Ideas

We had a number of different concepts that we wanted to carry out within the music video. The first one was the idea of multiple narratives of people standing out from the crowd and not conforming to social norms. There was the idea that this concept would allow us to have multiple stories which would excite the audience and keep them interested as someone would be able to relate to one at least. However this idea we feel would be too hard to get all the narratives across and make them all expanded so that the audience understood what the video was about. It felt like the narratives would be rushed unlike if we were to do just one main narrative.

The idea we finally decided on, was one that we all feel we could do well and offer a passionate music video. The final idea is about a young boy who loves to dance contemporary. Dancing this style is not seen as normal judging by the every day boy. The boy is not accepted by friends or family and offer finds it hard to fit in to every day life. The boy (played by David Jackson) manages to disappear from the rest of the world by transporting into a mental state of dance where nothing is important other than himself and the music. The story leads on to more traumatic times when he realizes his life would not be worth living if he was not to dance. The story ends positively however with a twist on the audience questioning whether or not the boy did take his own life.

Naming the Band

We chose the name Exodus as it means the departure of people. The meaning behind this is that the song we have chosen “tiptoe” refers to how most people conform to a social norm. We felt this name was appropriate as the song is about how people are starting to venture away for what we call “normality”.
Our band consists of 5 people- lead singer, drummer, guitarist, bassist and pianist. The bands look will be young, innovative and energetic.

The song is based on what we think is a normal every day lifestyle and how it is so hard to be accepted into the world, we felt the name EXODUS explained the song perfectly but also what we want the band to represent.

Digipak Research - Imagine Dragons - Night Visions

The front cover of the digipak includes an image of an anonymous boy he is facing away from the viewer. He is standing on a pillar of rock which is surrounded by other pillars. This has connotations of being isolated and feeling vulnerable, which is a key theme in Imagine Dragon songs such as Tiptoe. The background of the image is a dark pink and blue smoky sky which can show he has a mystery future ahead of him. The name ‘Imagine Dragons’ is in the bands house style which makes it recognisable for fans and the logo elsewhere. The album title appears underneath in a different font which stays consistent with the song names listed on the back of the digipak.

The image behind the disk is unclear and hard to see but appears to be the same as the background on the front cover. The disk itself is plain grey with barely visible textured spots. This links in with the connotations of the sky on the front cover, the pattern is still generating like a computer and the boy still has time to work out his future. The font is white and curly around the hole in the centre of the disk, with the band name in bold and the album title next to it in the album house style font. This style of positioning for the font is quite modern and creative, utilising the physical shape of the disk.

The pages on the left hand side feature an image of the band, standing on a bare hill with dark skies above them. The colours here tend to revolve around grey and brown, which create connotations with quite dull lives and not really knowing where they are going. A mathematical problem is placed at the top of the image. This has a link to confusion or problem solving, which connects to the idea of everything being unclear for the character on the front cover. The following page on the right is black with white lyrics; another optical illusion is used in the background which enforces the connotations.

DigiPak Research - The Script - Science & Faith

The colour scheme is very simplistic as the the main colours are brown, creams and blacks which are faded which works really well. The colour scheme could relate to the idea of the songs and the lyrics  could be based on past experiences. Furthermore, this could suggest to the buyer that this album is very personal towards the band.In addition, this colour scheme shows the band to be earthy and pure. In our final digipak, we could use this idea of faded colours as the song we have chosen 'tiptoe' is interpreted as leaving all your problems and insecurities behind. However, this colour scheme shows The Script to have calm and relaxed music, whereas the song we have chosen it heavily produced and dynamic.

The front cover photo is a close-up of the script's lead singer and two mid-shots of the two other band members, in the distance. By having a close up of the lead singer this is very conventional as the lead singer of a band is usually the most famous and influential. This close-up of the lead singer could also mean that he has wrote all the songs and this album is very personal to him. In our digipak, we could use this technique of photography to show the lead singer as the most important person in the band. However, the song we have chosen is very instrument based and many band members, so it might be a better idea to keep the whole band on the same level.

Additionally, the two photos on the back cover and the front of the lyric book are position. The positions of the hands in the booklet and the back cover suggests that the album is very emotional and 'holding on' to something. Furthermore, it infers to the buyer that this album is about love, as hands holding is usual a symbol of love, protection and unity. The images we will use in our digipak will not be of this type as our song is about escaping social norms and not about love and heartbreak. On the other hand, we could use symbolism to portray to the buyer the mood and feel of the album and the music included in it.

Furthermore, the colour black used on the actual CD disk has been used in there generic font which they usually use for the band's promotion. In addition the black contrasts with the faded brown. This colour also links to the black clothing worn by the band. By doing this it makes the whole digipak link together and make it more rounded. Moreover, the black used on the whole album suggests to the buyer that there is a darker side to the band and the songs produced put on the album. In Exodus' digipak we could use the technique of colours contrasting to show a darker side in music as the song we have chosen 'tiptoe' by Imagine Dragons has deeper undertones. Furthermore, in our music video we have a primary idea we want the band and the actors to wear dark clothing, so it could link with the photos used in the digipak.

Ideas and Inspiration

As we want our music video to have some sort of dance orientation to the narrative we must look at dance films and other dance orientated music videos. So, we must look at these examples for ideas and inspiration for choreography, mise en scene, editing and camera shots, movement and angles.

One of the examples I look at was clips on YouTube was a clip of a dance scene from the dance film franchise Step-Up. Below is the clips I watched...

Choreography

From these two clips the choreography is shown to be very free flowing and suggest that their dancing is 'improvised'. This could suggest to the audience that these dancers are very passionate about dance and it is their life. Furthermore, the choreography infers to the audience that the choreography is reflecting the emotions of the dancers. In our music video, we could use this idea of the choreography is affected by the emotion of the dancers and the events that are unfolding in their lives.

  Great Camera Angles

In these films there are many different camera angles used to show the spectacle of the dance sequences. One of the most impressive shots used in the first clip is a great master shot of the whole dance cast. As well as this shot showing the dancers in action, it shows the location of the film to be very vibrant and colourful,  which reflects the style of dance choreographed as it is very dynamic and innoative. Furthermore, this shot shows the costume of each dancer, which will firstly introduce the personality and their own individual style. Another shot from the second video which striking is a slow motion long-shot of a man doing an impressive trick in the rain. This shot is exercuted brillantly as the water on him spills rapidly which gives an namazing affect. Furthermore as the shot bring in slow motion it shows the trick and its diffculty to the viewer. In our music video we could use slowmotion to show an amazing trick of the dancer to show thew spectacle to the audience.

Mise En Scene

As both of these films are shot with people supposly being 'disadvanged' or 'rebelius' and the costumes used in both of these films suggest. For example, the girls are shown to be in hoodies and cropped 'jeany' pants. Furthermore, the makeup used in these two scenes is very natural and neutral. This could be good inspiration for our music video as we want our main character to be very absued and unhealthy. In addition, the lighting used throughout these two scenes are either dark or the lighting is very natural. This is a good idea for our music video as we want our music video to be relastic and not artifical.

Digipak Research - Disclosure's Settle

The front cover of the digipak includes an image of two young boys with their faces cover with a white outline of a face. From there faces being covered it suggest to the buyer that this album is very mysterious and unique. Furthermore, this white face is used very much throughout the duo's album and tour, so it can be used to link the duo's overall brand and image together. In our digipak, we could use this idea of using a symbol through out to link the whole digipak together. It can also show the examiner that we have created an image for our band.

Also, on the front cover of the album is the name of the duo and the title of the album. The colours used are black and white. These colours used are contrasting to each other, therefore the title and name stands out on the front cover. Furthermore, the white used for the word 'settle' makes it stand out from the rest of the front cover, as the rest of the colour scheme is quite simple and natural. On the front cover of our digipak, we could use a bright colour which contrasts to with our colour scheme on our digipak. However if our digipak is colourful we will not be able to the contesting colours because it make look a bit tacky.

On the back cover, the designer has used the same font on the front cover as well. By doing this it links the whole digipak together. The text is also in white, like the title of the album of the front cover. By using the white colour on the back cover it shows like on the front cover that this text is very important on the digipak. In our digipak we could use the same colour on the text throughout as it will link the whole digipak together.

In addition, on the back cover the colour scheme is a very simple slivery-grey. By doing this, it causes the text on the back cover to stand out and make it the most important principle on the back cover. Furthermore, by the colour scheme being 'non flashy' it suggests to the buyer of the album that Disclosure's album is all about the music. We could use this idea of a non 'flashy' colour scheme. As the song and the band we have chosen is quite serious and meaningful. However, the song we have decided on is very dynamic so the colour scheme may have to match.

Music Video Research - The Script's Superheroes

At the start the video starts off showing the surrounding area which loos like the slums in parts of Africa. For this section of the video all the footage looks like it is filmed on a handheld camera or a stead-cam. By using types of camera movement it gives a sense to the audience that these locations are poverty stricken and very run down. This idea of the location can link to the name of the song 'superheroes' as the people living in these towns/villages go through so much, such as: illness, violence and low income. In our music video we could use the technique of using different camera movements to show sadness and neglect as our main narrative is about abuse. However, where we are thinking of filming in a very urban area so it wouldn't give the same affect.

Furthermore, at the start of the video they use many wide- shot to show the location and the day-to-day lives these people live. This creates a little in-site to the people in the video lives, as the video shows the location to be neglected. In addition, this links to the song's name superheroes, as they are shown to be living in poverty. In our music video, we could use wide-shots to set the mood of the video and show the life of our main actor in the narrative. However, we would use wide shot to show the vandalized locations instead of poverty.

Additionally, mise-en-scene plays a big role in the video, for showing the true meaning of the song's name 'superheroes'. One of the most affected pieces of mise-en-scene is the use of costume. One point in the video the man takes off his suit jacket and puts on old clothes and starts working on the rubbish site. This infers to the audience that the man is 'ashamed' of his real job. This reinforces the meaning of the song that there is always light at the tunnel, in any situation. In our music video we are going to use mise-en-scene to show the change in attitude of the actor. However, instead of costume, we are going to use colour to show our actor changing in mood throughout the story.

In the Script's music video, the editor has used a range of techniques. One of the most striking editing techniques used the fast paced takes. By editing this video this way, it matches the song's pace. So when the chorus is being played the takes are very quick and when the song slows down the scene are edited much slower. By matching the takes with the song it makes the audience more engaged with the story. This song we have chosen for our music video is very fast paced the whole way through so we will have to use fast editing in our music video to match the song.

What Makes a A Standard Digipak

As part of this music video project we have create a full digipak with a front cover, inside cover, back cover spine and cd. There are five main factors that are needed to create a A standard digipak. The first main factor of an A standard digipak is that the digipak needs a brand image. This is needed on a digipak as it will help the buyer to associated certain images and colours. Furthermore, this will make the band more memoriable. The second main factor needed on a digipak to make a successful one is that it must match the conventions of the genre of music of the band. For example, an indie band will have dark colours with pictures of the band with instruments. On the other hand, an R&B artist's digipak would have conventions of graffiti and the mise en scene of the costumes being very laid back. By having conventions in a digipak it helps the buyer to distinguish which genre of music the band or artist. In addition, creative artwork is also a main factor for a successful digipak. By having creative artwork in a digipak can make it eye-catching and original causing the buyer to want to go over and look at the digipak, this could mean that the buyer could purchase the digipak. Additionally, another factor is is that the digipak must be most detailed on the back cover. This is a major convention of digipaks as it shows the track list and credentials. By adding this onto the digipak it will make it look much more professional. The final factor that makes a digipak successful is that the house style must be consistant. By included this in the digipak will make the digipak more connected together and stop it from looking tacky and random.

Digipak Research - Arctic Monkeys - What ever people say I am, I am not

This digipak is very simple. The dull greyscale colour scheme is often used by independent bands who don't want much distraction from their music. The minimum amount of design and photography represents them as a band. The man on the front and back cover of the digipak is supposed to reflect on the bands personality. They portray themselves as average, "working class" people. The man featured on the digipak also represents potentially what their target audience is like. They have done this to attract their target demographic and send out the message that fame hasn't changed who they really are, and they are different from the "stereotypical" boy band. They're trying to suggest that they created the album for their fans rather than the fame. The mise-en-scene used also helps present the "working class" and "average" theme. Usual everyday clothing, cigarettes and standard hair style help their audience relate more to them as the album fits their personality rather than someone who is more "upper class". Indeed, this man on the front and back cover may not have been used for this reason. This could infact be a stereotype, to show possible new audience and fans a view of the bands personality.

The colour scheme again, reflect on the band's overall style. The dark grey and black colours seem to symbolise dull and depressing things, reflecting what their songs are about. It creates a unique difference from the typical boy band, and a "down to earth" style.

The cigarettes used to decorate the CD itself could have been used to show how they have "bad" personalities. They could also be suggesting that the sense of "bad" they give off, is addictive... like their music.

Digipak Research - Rihanna - Loud

The digipak has a consistent theme running throughout of flowers. The digipak unfolds first with the artist lying on a bed of roses, suggesting the meaning of the songs on the album are mostly about love and romance. Roses are commonly a metaphor these themes. The floral theme then runs onto the actual CD itself which is a pale pink rose as well following the theme throughout. However with the drastic change in colour on the CD it could suggest an innocent of love to the album instead of the harsh red colour suggesting dangerous.
I think that this creates a pattern within the digipak and by having a theme it allows the digipak to look more professional and together. It also allows the audience to understand Rihanna's album more before even listening to the album.

The colors within the album are mostly red. This works well with the title of the album 'LOUD' as it is a bright and vibrant colour, exaggerating the 'LOUD' on the front cover of the digipak. The front cover is straight forward with a close up shot of Rihanna.

The photo of Rihanna is seductive as she is wearing red lips suggesting this. The main focus of this photo is Rihanna, this could also have a deeper meaning that the album is all about her which could excite the audience as her fans want to know more about her. I feel this could be a good way to excite the audience when buying the album as they can uncover for themselves who EXODUS are. Using hidden meanings behind the image add more mystery to the album.

The typography within the front cover, is not as loud as the other colours, this looks good as the actual title of the album is the weakest point, it almost contrasts within the name it self that the text is white and barely noticeable suggesting that the songs within the album are a front that the artist puts on, just like the red colours on the outside of the album however the inside is pink suggesting Rihanna's image is a front.

The back cover is a message from Rihanna to the audience, written by herself that uncovers what each of the songs mean and who they were written for. This is a personal touch as it gives the audience a sense as to what Rihanna was writing the songs for and what she was going through, this helps audiences understand her more. the images on the back are seductive and will catch male attention. She is dressed in white suggesting an innonence to her persona and creates more of a persona as the images on the album are all of her. The ongoing pink theme continues to the back, where no red is used, this further suggests to sides to the star that is effective.

Communication

To help communication, we all exchanged numbers and made a group message where we could all broadcast ideas and arrange shoots together. This made the process a lot easier and everyone was involved and knew what was happening within the group.

On the message we will discuss shoots and ideas, also travel arrangements and any other information that is needed in order to make the shoots go successfully.

Wednesday 17 September 2014

Lyrics

We sat down and went through the lyrics of the song to recognise what they would mean and to brainstorm ideas for the video. We sat down as a group and decided to annotate the lyrics of the song in order to recognise any metaphors within it in which we could expand on.

The lyrics that were annotated are shown below as they're were many ideas that we thought of.

Song Chosen

As a group we decided that the song that we would do our music video on was 'Tiptoe' by Imagine Dragons. We came to a final decsion as this song is very dynamic, powerful and has a strong message, in which we could create a powerful message within our music video.

Target Audience Feedback For Music Video

Today I created a survey with questions about music videos from our target audience from 16-20 year olds. Receiving feedback from our target audience is great to help us develop ideas for when we create our storyboards and start to film our rough cut of the music video.Below are photos of the survey I gave to our target audience.

From the results we got I decided to created some pie charts to make it simpler to what feedback we got and to be able to apply it to our music video. Below are some of the most important questions asked on the survey.

This was just a simple question to help us see what females and males likes and dislikes in a music videos and the contrasts between genders.

From this question the feedback is that our target audience prefers a music video to mainly be narrative instead of spectacle or performance. We now must take this into consideration when creating our storyboard, that it is narrative dominant. However, we still need to have performance of the band or artist as we need to be able to create a brand.

From this question the feedback is that our target audience enjoy a lead singer which engages with the audience. From this feedback we can certainly say that the lead singer needs to be confident and to be able to look right into the camera and give eye contact to the viewer and make them believe his personality.

From this question, the feedback we got off our target audience was very mixed, so we can have a lot of freedom in how we film our music video.

From this question, the feedback we got was that our target audience like a video that has more natural tones to it. For example, scenic shots outside with natural light instead of shots in a studio with artificial lighting.

Music Video Research of The 1975's - Settle Down

The 1975 are an English indie rock band from Manchester. The Music Video for "Settle Down" was published on January the 29th, 2014.

The video seems to hold a number of different messages, it is another that allows the audience to either interpret the video in their own way, or be left in confusion. The video is very basic from the start, the use of black and white through the whole video seems to hide the actual meaning of the song, as it is very difficult for the audience to distinctly figure out what is going on. To watch the music video, click the link below:

The 1975 - Settle Down

The 1975 have a very unique look and style to go with their music. This is something we could come to think about as a group when creating our band personality and video, to make everything as realistic as possible. Through the use of stylish cinematography "Settle Down" is another beautifully shot video to add to The 1975's collection. Lead singer, Matt Healey revealed the idea of the video to help answer questions for their audience, however the explanation still leaves people unsure of what it is really about. The video is based on Matt's reoccurring dream he used to have as a child. The location in the video is what he dreams of every time, and is similar to where his parents grew up; a small area in northern England, to reflect back to the history of his childhood and family. With the song "Settle Down", the band wanted to make an extension on his dream, a video that explores love and is consuming and interesting to watch.

The beauty of the narrative is people not being able to figure out the story. It's something they do very cleverly, as the song has a significant meaning, but the music video does not match. Another element that seems very odd is the camera movement. When listening to this song you would expect a fast moving video with lots going on, however they do the complete opposite. This is something I think we should avoid when creating our video. Another element we shouldn't take from this is the lack of performance. The video features lead singer, Matt Healey, in the narrative but there is no band performance or change in the narrative. This seems to happen in a few of their past music videos, which is what makes The 1975 so different and unique.

Mise-en-scene doesn't seem to play a huge part in the video when first watching it. Everything such as costume, locations and lighting is pretty much the same from start to finish. However, the dark clothing and the monochrome theme reflects this strange narrative that cannot be unravelled. The black and white is almost acting as a shield, hiding the story away from the audience. After a bit of analysis, the mise-en-scene is actually quite affective. This is something we could perhaps use in our video, for example using very small elements to refer back to the meaning of our song, almost tricking the audience.

The lighting changes only at the very end of the song, where there is a peculiar change in the narrative. The lighting is extremely dull throughout the video, this is because it is a visual image of his reoccurring dream. When the light brightens at the very end, I believe this is because he is awakening from his dream and being pulled back into reality. The image of the whirlwind in the sky at the end could suggest his mind spinning in confusion as he awakes from his strange dream.

One key editing technique that I feel is extremely important in the music video is the slow moving takes which are used in nearly all of the video. I think the slow motion is used to help the audience really connect with him and his dream. The slow movement on a whole is used to refer back to the dreamy, sleepy daze he is in. The long take of the clouds spinning in the final frame of the video suggests the on-going reoccurrence, showing that the dream will never go away and he will be trapped inside this environment every time he falls asleep.

Music Video Research of Disclosure's - White Noise

The music video concentrates greatly on cinematography, to enhance the audience’s interpretation of the music video and also their experience. Throughout the video the audience is following the protagonist as he goes about his normal daily routine. The audience follows him as a third person audience, this is to allow the camera to use hand held motion which portrays a smooth and realistic flow. This makes the audience seem like they are part of the journey, which is very key in drawing the audience in and making them feel involved with the characters.
As our song choice also concentrates intensely on the life and emotions of the protagonist, this camera technique would be very suitable for us. Our initial ideas include the journey of the characters confidence and life away from 'social norm'. Making the audience feel as they are with the character will exaggerate the characters feelings and help the audience understand the narrative more clearly.
Other techniques such as zooming, panning and the fasted paced cutting are also used when focusing on the protagonist. The effect of this adds to the reality of us looking in on their life, but as well to aid smooth transitions and make it look aesthetically pleasing to the distinct demographic of the music genre.
It is vital that we make sure our camera work is conventional with the music genre of indie pop. If we don't make the camera work meet the expectations of the demographic the video will not be successful, and will not be suitable for the song. To solve this problem we will do research into conventions and aesthetics of indie pop camera work to get inspiration for our own ideas.
The mise en scene element of the video plays a big part in how the demographic judge the aesthetics of the video. Throughout the music video dark colours and lighting is used, this relates with the underground location used within the video itself. The gritty dark style of the music video, which is created through a colour filter, is used to emphasize the lighting taking place throughout. This emphasizes the shadows in the music video, which when the Security Guard dances helps to give a greater effect of his movements.
The dark lighting and filter could also be linked to the theme of our ideas. The bitter storey of our protagonist can be enforced strongly by the use of dark lighting as it can resemble hatred along with the sense of being trapped and lost.
The locations that are used throughout the music video help convey the genre of the music itself, which is urban/electronic dance. The abandoned nature of the locations adds connotations of an empty place, which infers that the music fills that empty space which could metaphorically be the protagonists life.
Again this can be linked greatly to our narrative ideas. Not only will the symbol of emptiness be enforced by the location but abandoned buildings are different and can be powerful bonus when maintaining the audiences interest. The only negative is that locating an abandoned building can be difficult to achieve due to popularity and safety.
The fact that the character is carrying a torch creates connotations of searching which, with the genre of music, could mean searching for love. The fact it is primarily based on 1 person through the video, connotes loneliness and separation which enforces the idea of an empty space inside the character. Lastly the location of abandoned buildings could link in connotations of 'lost love' or an empty heart waiting to be filled.
The meaning of our song choice links to separation between what is seen as normal and people being themselves. Our protagonist will be taking the route of expressing their own personality which will be frowned upon. So location and props could be used to represent this idea by using a setting out of the norm.

Music Video Research of Imagine Dragons' - Demons

Imagine Dragons - Demons

One by one, the stage spotlights someone in the audience and takes them outside of the concert hall into their real life. The story zooms in on that person’s own demon, whether it’s the woman who has just lost a loved one, the young man battling from anorexia (or some disease that has left his body decimated), the son bullied by his father,  or the soldier struggling from PTSD.

The video has a very deep message and really intrigues the audiences. By using such heart felt story lines throughout their narratives, the director really captivates the audience. This is something that the group could definitely consider when creating are own music video.

However a negative to the video is that the start is extremely misleading as the start of the song begins with majority performance, most music videos, audiences are looking for a reason and understanding of the song and therefore this could put the audience off watching the full video if they think it is solely just performance.

This genre of song, is definitely something I think the group should consider, the alternative rock band genres have a lot more meaning behind their songs and this would be easier to create a narrative and performance aspect to a video. I feel that amongst this genre of songs, there are many unheard songs that have so much background to them.

I think the multiple narratives within the video are a good idea, it allows more of the audience to feel compatible to the song which expands the bands audience and more feel are connect with the song. This would be a clever idea to consider as the video will be understood by more people.

The mise en scene in the video uses a lot of dark lighting to show the dramatic times of the 'demons'. This is effective and sets the mood of anger and upset as the video is trying to insinuate. The editing within the video is fast until the narratives happen, in that sense they are slow and long. This could be a metaphor for showing demons are long lasting and hard to get away from.

I appreciate a lot of aspects throughout this music video. I love the deep meaning to the song and think the narratives can relate to many people even if they are very traumatic. I would definitely like my group to take inspiration from this video as i think there is a lot too work with when a song as a deeper meaning.
