Music Video Research of Sia's - Chandelier

Hello readers,

In order to come up with innovative ideas for our music video, as a group we must explore other music videos of artists in the same genre of music that our song falls into. Furthermore, researching various artists can help the groups on deciding what types of camera angles and movement, mise-en-scene and editing to use in the production of our music video. Below is a link to the music video being analysed in this blog post.

Sia - Chandelier

As this video is very unique, many inspiring ideas are presented to the viewer, which our group can use in our music video when shooting and storyboard. One of the most striking principles used, is the use of very interruptive choreography of the dancer.  The choreography used is very free-flowing and it almost suggested to the reader that this is improvised and spontaneous. This projects the true meaning of lyrics, "I am going to live
tomorrow like this doesn't exist". Another idea presented in the music video is that the camera is never stationary. By using this technique it infers to the viewer that we are following the character's personal battle throughout the video.

Furthermore, this video also has some ideas that would not be appropriate for the song we have chosen. The first technique used that would not be suitable to our music video is the use of very slow frames. When editing the video, the editor would avoid this because it would not fit with our song's rhythm and it also as it has many instrumental elements. Another element of this music video that we will avoid is how it is 100% narrative. Since our song we have chosen is from a band we must include some performance in the music video to be able to link the brand of the band to the music video.

As this music video is only a few long frames, many of the shots and movements used are very similar to each other. However, one of the most striking camera angles used in the music video is the long shot of the young girl, tanking of the door frames. As this shot is used right at the start of the music video it sets the mood of the whole music video of it being very different and divergent. One of the most amazing camera movements used in this music video is the tracking of the young girl in the hall way. The tracing's pace is very fast which matches the songs tempo at the point in the song and also the vigorous choreograph the young girl performs.

Mise-en-scene is used very affectively throughout this music video. The costume used on the young girl is a neutral - coloured leotard. By using this costume, it suggests to the viewer that there no emotion in her and she is down to her skin. This connects to the main meaning of the song, which is the story of an alcoholic. The make-up used on the young girls is also very neutral which reinforces the idea of the character showing herself to be very bare and emotionless. All the props used in the video are very basis and colourless. This almost gives the viewer an insight into the character mind and body. The lighting used throughout the video is very natural but there are many darkened corners and places at the location. These darkened places could infer that there is much darkness and sadness in this character's mind and also reinforcing the idea of the location and props representing the character's mind and body.

Throughout this video only a few editing techniques have been executed. One of the most wonderful editing techniques used is the use of very slow paced frames. By using slow paced frames, the viewer is able to experience the full affect of the choreography. However using slow paced frames it contradicts the song's actually pace and the unique and explosive choreography. The slow paced frames also connect to the meaning of the song's lyrics by alcoholic almost being in a daze.
